Trees for Tribs

  • Gedney Park

The New Castle Conservation Board is planting trees and shrubs at Gedney Park as part of the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Trees for Tribs program. Planting along the water’s edge protects water quality and provides wildlife habitat.

The proposed planting area is directly along a tributary to the Sawmill River on either side of the stream. The west bank is open grass with one mature maple, the east bank has several mature trees. The planting area varies from partial shade to full sun and the soil is moist.

We will need lots of community member volunteers to plant over 110 small trees and shrubs. Social distancing, masks, and other safety procedures will be followed. Just bring gloves, and if you have a shovel or spade, or a hand held sledge hammer, that would help too!

We have created a sign-up sheet at this link found here. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C4BA4A62AA1FB6-help

Please join us, and bring your friends! Note: 11/8 will be a rain date if needed.

Here is the list of trees and shrubs if you would like to add them to your yard: Red Maple (Acer rubrum); River Birch (Betula nigra); Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica) Red-Osier Dogwood (Cornus sericea); Witchhazel (Hamamelis virginiana); Winterberry (Ilex verticilatta); Black Chokeberry (Photinia Melanocarpa (Aronia); Arborvitae Northern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis)
