Hermann von Pückler-Muskau: German landscape principles in the American landscape

  • 10/09/2019
  • 1:00 PM
  • William J. Vescio Community Center, 1 Library Road, Briarcliff Manor

At this Briarciff Manor Garden Club program:

Brendan Kenney will give a PowerPoint presentation that will include many photos of his travels to Pückler-Muskau‘s gardens in Germany & Poland, as well as to sites in the USA that utilized his ideas.

Pückler-Muskau's writings are not well-known in the English-speaking world as little has been translated. Prospect Park and Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati are 2 prime places to see his landscape ideas in North America. Locust Grove in Poughkeepsie also shows his influence.

Brendan Kenney was raised in a glaciated river valley in Indiana amidst varied lanscapes: woods, meadow, suburban yard, golf course snd corn fields. Exposure to German garden culture while in college led to a fascination and thirst for knowledge.  He spent 18 years community gardening in Manhattan. Founding a non-profit in the East Village where he constructed a rock garden and s hardy cactus garden.  Currently he is Chairman of the Manhattan Chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society and on the Board of Directors of NARGS.
