"Native Plants for Birds and Butterflies"

Inspired by last month's speaker, the theme is The Edible Landscape & Baking — bring something homemade featuring an edible plant.

Our own Fran Gardner will be on-hand to announce a winner.

Rumor has it a certain someone is bringing lavender shortbread... we're not saying who, but we're very excited. Bring your tastebuds!

John's Bio

John Hannan is a lifelong naturalist, gardener, photographer, and amateur ornithologist whose passion for the natural world was shaped by living and working all across the globe. A Somers, NY resident for the past 26 years, John has been connected to the Audubon family throughout that time. On staff, at National Audubon, he helped launch the Americas Flyway Strategies and the Audubon at Home native plant and habitat program. John has consulted for the American Bird Conservancy, Manomet, Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, and BirdLife International, the world’s largest network of bird conservation organizations. His volunteer leadership roles include Chair of the Audubon New York State Chapters’ Council and President of the Bedford Audubon Board of Directors. His particular local interest lies in furthering Bedford Audubon's leadership role in conservation as one of the largest nonprofit landowners in Westchester County — and the significant opportunity that presents for bird conservation, responsible habitat management, and serving as a model for landowners throughout the region. He is a regular contributor to publications and conferences on the topics of conservation, native gardens, bird watching, nature photography, and eco-travel.

Tour: New Castle Pollinator Patches 2026 (04/25/2026)

Come celebrate our diverse public spaces on a self-guided tour of our downtown pollinator garden patches. Discover the beauty and impact of pollinator - friendly gardening.

Each stop on the tour offers ideas and inspiration for how you can make your own garden patch a haven for pollinators. Members of the Chappaqua Garden Club will be stationed at each stop to share information about the plants chosen for that site. Children will be invited to create their own pollinator that visits each site and collects pollen along the way. Children will search for the Secret Garden Patch hidden in our town. Join us to find out how you can grow your own pollinator patch. The tour starts at the Chappaqua Library Tent where participants can pick up a tour map before heading out to explore these mini gardens in our town. This is a great way to connect with nature, neighbors and local conservation efforts. The tour celebration ends at the New Castle Town Hall Peace Garden. Each visitor will leave with a pollinator plant for their own garden, Can't wait to see you there!

Earth Day Event - New Castle (04/26/2026)

Throughout the season, we will plant, maintain, and harvest a variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers for participants to take home. The program is open to all seniors, but sessions are weather-dependent. If in doubt, please contact the Community Center at 914-238-8888 for clarification. This program is a partnership of the Chappaqua Garden Club and the New Castle Recreation and Parks Department.

The Chappaqua Garden Club has arranged a private tour of Sleepy Cat Farm in Greenwich, Connecticut on Tuesday, June 9 at 10:00 AM.
(Rain date: Wednesday, June 10)

Sleepy Cat Farm is a stunning 13-acre private estate featuring beautifully designed garden “rooms,” pavilions, pathways, water features, sculpture, and extraordinary seasonal plantings. Thoughtfully created over many years, the landscape offers a harmonious blend of horticulture, architecture, and artistic expression — truly an inspiring experience for garden lovers.

Cost: $10 per person
Tour Length: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours
Parking: Space is limited to about 8–10 cars, so carpooling is strongly recommended

The garden is 13.5 acres and has numerous steps (most without railings) and grade changes, so it is recommended to wear sturdy footwear.
