Chappaqua Garden Club is pleased to offer select spring-flowering ephemerals. There will be some available at the Plant Sale May 9-11.True to their name, these special perennials emerge and bloom quickly, set seed, and die back to dormancy by summer to return more vigorous next spring. Their beautiful blooms provide cheer for us and nectar for emerging native bees. In contrast to spring bulbs such as daffodils and hyacinths which require sunny conditions, our native ephemerals are happiest growing in beds of moss and leaf litter beneath the bare branches of deciduous shade. It’s helpful to place companion plants such as carex, ferns, or native pachysandra nearby to remember where to look for them next spring!
